Angelas Backlink Packets Review (So Far)

Apr 03

As I said in my previous post, I have recently signed up for Angelas Backlink Packets which I started working though on Thursday night.

Firstly, as I didnt get the packet until the end of the month, most of the other users have already jumped in and done their links so some of the sites had either closed registration, removed link fields or changed the fields to plain text only. So far I have gone through about 20 of the sites and probably 5 are “dead”. I was expecting this anyway though so its not really a problem.

When you subscribe to the backlink packets, Angela will send you an email with a link to a page containing that months packets. I thought it was a bit odd that a package of 30 links was spread across 7 zip files at about 2MB each, however once you have downloaded the packages it becomes clearer. This isn’t just a list of URL’s, there is a guide for each and every site, showing you where to sign up, where to put your links and what code to use for the links.

The backlink packet for March contained 32 backlinks, or which there were 2 PR9 sites, 1 PR8 site, 9 PR7 sites, 19 PR6 sites and 1 PR5 site. One thing which I already knew, but is worth pointing out with Angela’s links is that these are the Page Ranks (PR) of the homepage of the site, your link will be on a newly created profile page, or an inner page on the site with lower or no Page Rank.

From what I have seen so far, there are 2 different types of links in the packet. The most common one is a profile page on a forum or networking site which contains your links, and the others are sites where you will need to leave a relevant comment on either a blog or forum to squeeze your backlink in.

The content of the sites vary widely, covering an array of niches. In this months packaet there were web development sites, health sites, law sites and many more. Obviously this will vary from month to month, but if you do find a site which is in your niche then it may well be worth a bit more than just a profile link.

As I said at the start, I’ve gone through about 20 of the sites and created the backlinks. I did 5 on Thursday and 15 yesterday. I have put 2 links on each site, pointing to 2 of my sites. Is it too early to expect results? Yes. Have I seen any results? Yes.

One of my sites which had been sitting comfortably at 6th & 7th on the first page has now shot up to 3rd & 4th, with only one site outranking me taking positions 1 & 2. The second site I linked to was more of an experiment. A site I had created a month or so ago and hadnt got around to do any backlinks to. The site had been indexed, but wasnt in the top 200 for my targeted keywords. The site is now ranking top of the 2nd page, at number 11 for the targeted keyword!

I thought I would do a little more digging. From what I can see in Google, only 2 of the links I created have been indexed! Once I have added the rest of the backlinks, I’ll go through and collect all of the backlink URLs (should have kept a note of them from the start!) and either create an RSS feed to submit, submit them to a social bookmarking site, or post them on a blogger/blogspot blog, or possibly a combination of all three!

So, my review so far… This backlink packet costs $5 (£3) per month for a minimum of 30 URLs. From the 30 URL’s probably 20-25 of the links will still be working at the end of the first month and I would imagine this will drop to 10-15 with time. However, provided my results dont drop too much from their current rankings then its definately worth the $5. If adding the extra links, and getting all the pages indexed pushes the rankings up even further then that will be even better.

The main “problem” I am having is the time to create all the links. I have seen a few WSO’s for automation or speeding up of these link packets so I need to do a bit of digging around and see if any of them are any good.

Advanced SEO Course From Business Link

Apr 01

As some of you may know I had booked myself on an Advanced SEO course which was provided FREE by Business Link.

The course took place on Monday and unfortunately I was quite disappointed in it. I had hoped the course would take my SEO to the next level; however all I found it useful was for measuring my current level, which based on the course title, I would say is “Advanced”.

Everything which was covered I already knew, and someone with “basic” knowledge could have picked up within a day browsing over at Warrior Forums and reading a few decent Internet Marketing blogs. A lot of the content was dated as well (screenshots dated 2006/2007), some was quite vague and other sections that could have been covered in 5 minutes were dragged out to 30 minutes.

The course pretty much consisted of:

Onsite Optimisation: Where to position your content and links in order to rank as well as possible, also the importance of Title tags etc. Shouldn’t this have been covered on the basic SEO course?

Keyword Research: A couple of sections on how to pick your keywords which could have been summed up as “Use Google Keyword Tool”.

Viral Marketing: Possibly the most disappointing section of the day. I was really hoping to pick up some decent info here, instead it was a case of “release your content free for everyone, but put a link back to your site in it”.

Link Building: The final and most interesting section of the course. This covered a few places we could get links from. A lot of the sources were questionable, for example, a link from your Google profile and submitting your site to as many directories as possible. The lecturer then went on to talk about how he currently buys 30 links per month for $5 and that there are certain forums on the internet where you can go and find these cheap links and keep up to date with changes in the SEO world. I automatically assumed he was talking about Angela’s links and Warrior Forums, which he confirmed. I had looked at Angela’s links several times before but always been put off by the bad reviews on the net so I took this opportunity to ask an experienced and professional Internet Marketer about them. In a nutshell, he said that they do work when used properly, but they need to be backed up with article and directory submissions, natural links from other sites and blog/forum comments from relevant sites.

So, a 7 hour Advanced SEO course, and all I learnt was that its worth giving Angela’s Links a go. I suppose I shouldn’t complain really, it was a free course and it confirmed what I already knew, I just feel the content needed bringing up to date and that the course was only a basic course, intermediate at best, not an advanced course.

I’ve now signed up for Angela’s links and received March’s package this morning which I will be putting into action over the weekend. Once I have done so I’ll review the package and hopefully within a couple of weeks I’ll be able to review the results.

Selling Websites & Domains

Mar 03

My clearout of domains and websites is almost complete, so I thought I would write a post about what I have leart while clearing out my old portfolio.

1) Just because you thought it was a great domain, doesnt mean it is! I have a few domains which I thought were great domains that I could develop, or just sell on and make a decent profit on. However, after listing them several times on Digital Point it has become clear that not everyone has the same opinions of what makes a good domain. Needless to say, it works the other way as well. I had a couple of domains I was expecting to just let expire, s0 when I was offered $50 (about £30) for one of them I snapped their hand off!

2) Timewasters are… a waste of time. I sold a couple of websites/domains to users, who then refused to reply to emails/pm’s. I even made the mistake of even turning down an offer from a different user while waiting for a timewaster to reply. After the first two timewasters I decided if the user didnt get in touch within 24 hours I would sell the website to someone else.

3) Sell to a trustworthy seller. I had an offer of $1000 for one of my sites, however there was something very strange about the buyer. Wasnt interested in seeing proof of earnings, he had different names/usernames/emails for Digital Point/GoDaddy/Escrow. When I asked him about it, he insisted it was because he was in the forces and didnt want them to find out what he was doing online – which seemed even stranger. Anyway, I stopped the sale and held onto the site for another couple of months and eventually sold it to a reputable seller (he had already bought one of my cheaper sites), for 20% less than the original offer – but I had the money in my account within 10 minutes of agreeing the sale and everything went as smooth as possible! It might not always be the best offer, but I would personally rather take a guaranteed $800 over a possible $1000 any day.

Overall I am quite pleased with how easy it was to clear out the domains, and how much I actually made.  I have sold 14 domains/sites so far which cost me approximately $60. I wasnt hoping to make much profit, enough to cover a years decent hosting (£100/$160), in total from all of the sites/domains I sold, I ended up with about $1500 in my PayPal account – almost 10 times what I wanted and I still have another 3 or 4 undeveloped names to clear out.

Make More Sales From My Sites…

Mar 01

Just a brief update on how things are going in the affiliate marketing world for me. Firstly some of my small sites have been making sales (one which is a couple of months old and has never made a sale, made 5 sales within 2 day last week!), not much but they have been keeping me out of those horrible “no sale” days.

I got accepted for the Woolworths affiliate over the weekend so I have started loading the site with products, although I need to take a look at the database and see if there is any quicker way of getting all the products on. Im confident enough I can write a PHP script which will take the product feed and update any price changes and create a list of any new/deleted products – but putting 1100+ products into wordpress manually is a bit time consuming so need to get this automated if possible. The first week I wrote my 2 articles for the site as planned, but then last week I didnt do any so I need to get back into that and possibly write 3 for the next 2 weeks to catch me up.

My video game website is doing well and for the last week has been making a sale most days, which isnt bad considering its only receiving 10-15 uniques per day. I need to give the site a revamp and add a blog section to hopefully bring in a bit more search engine traffic (most is direct or referred from facebook at the minute). I could also do with building up the facebook fans, so I’ll be doing a bit of research on that when I get chance.

I also need to work on building backlinks. I have quite a few sites which are currently sitting at middle/bottom of the first page and I think with a few decent backlinks I could shift up to the top half of the page. Although this should be covered in the “Advanced Search Engine Optimisation” course which Im going to in a few weeks.

Im also going to try and sell my last non affiliate marketing website on either Digital Point or Flippa. The last one is my big site, although it only makes cash when I post really and as its mainly US traffic its difficult for me to post many deals (mainly due to the time difference). I had originally hoped for $1000 (£600), which is about 10 months earnings but Im now expecting to let it go for a bit less as I just want to get rid of it now.

I’ll update again when I have something interesting!

Affiliate Marketing Holiday

Feb 15

4 Weeks today and I’ll be jetting off to Egypt for a week! I cant wait, its long overdue as I messed up the dates for the holidays last year. We went in March and then again in June which has meant a 9 month wait for this holiday. I made sure I didnt make the same mistake again though and booked March & September this year :)

This is going to be a proper holiday, not like last year when I spent a couple of hours here and there working on different websites. I plan on doing no work at all. I think I need to make myself not do anything. Im out of the house 10 hours a day at my full time job, then I spent a good 3 hours per night working on my sites or doing research. At the weekends I spend about 5 to 7 hours per day working on my sites, so all in I “work” for about 75-80 hours per week!

I know people that think that by chucking a single post of copied content onto a domain and leaving it, it will magically make them money. Im not one of those! I know if this is going to work for me, I need to put the hours is now, do the research and get on with it. However I also know that after 4 months of doing 80 hour weeks, with most of it sat in front of a computer screen, I need a proper holiday. No computer and no work!

A Change Of Plan…

Feb 13

So, my original plan was to create a site week and hope that by the end of the year that each site was making me at least £1 a day. Since starting though I have decided that larger sites may be the best way of getting a decent income from affiliate marketing. I’m still going to create some smaller sites, probably one per month, but I am going to focus on my two large sites for the remainder of the month.

My first large site is in the Toys market. The site is pretty much ready to go, I have a few articles written, now im just waiting for my chosen merchant to approve me. Once they have approved me I’m going to need to import all of the products (which will all need at least some manual work) so that will take a while. However once I have all the products in I will write a PHP script to update all the necessary fields direct from the feed, change the merchant links on products which are no longer stocked, and send me an email with the details of any new products.

The second site is my gaming site which I started and was going to leave. The site has now made me 3 sales, and the Facebook account has 14 fans (last time I looked it was 2!). The site needs a few changes (add a blog, remove adsense blocks, add an expire button etc) and then it will be a case of me up dating it more often, checking for deals 2 or 3 times per day.

I also purchased a domain name over the weekend (I know, I really need to stop buying them, but I have sold most of my others now) which is a follow up to the biggest toy craze of last year. I got a direct match on a .co.uk domain for it as it was only announced recently at the Toy Fair. If nothing else, I would imagine I could sell it for a decent profit undeveloped

Back In The Game!

Feb 09

After a bad week last week, this week is looking quite promising. I’ve made a few sales each day since Sunday which has put my earnings back up to what they where towards the end of January. This morning I noticed that one of my sites I had created a few weeks ago had made 2 sales since Sunday from only 12 uniques! The site hasnt even been updated in the last 10 days!

My new toys website is really starting to take shape now as well. I’m amazed at what I have managed to do just using wordpress! I’ve picked one main merchant to promote and just need to hope they accept me now! They pay 40% more than the industry standard (7% compared to 5% standard from most toy merchants). I’ve been scribbling down ideas for blog posts for the website as well so that when the site is ready I will have some decent content to pack it with initially, then Im going to try to write at least one post (hopefully two) per week once its up and running.

The deal site I mentioned earlier, I had originally planned on leaving as it was going to take too long to keep up to date as I was manually searching deal sites, checking the deals out myself and then writing a post about the deal. However having made the 2 sales from 12 clicks I’ve decided it may be worth working on it, so now once the Toys website is finished I will be redesigning the games website and streamlining the updating process.

Bad Week!

Feb 06

Last weekend I started to feel a bit “under the weather” and have been feeling worse each day since, so I have felt pretty bad all week.

Each night I check my earnings and make a note of them. After a dead first 2 weeks in January, I had a decent last 2 weeks, which put me on track to hit my targets. It had been nearly 3 weeks since my last no sale day, and over a month since my last no earnings day (no sale, but made money from adsense on some of my old sites).

So, how well did I do this week? Awful! I havent made a single sale since Tuesday, and have made a total of about 50p! So as you can imagine, Im not happy.

On a slightly better note though, I finished the site for one the domains I registered last weekend, just waiting for Google to index it now. The site I created the week before is now ranking 8th in Google purely based on on page SEO, so I will be doing some offsite SEO on it to move it up the rankings. I also finished the design for my new toy affiliate site and have a couple of posts ready.

New Website!

Feb 04

So over the last few days I have been thinking about my websites and how Im going go about hitting my targets I have set. I have decided to try and make a couple of large affiliate sites, and then quite a few small niche sites.

Over the weekend I started two new sites, both small niche sites which are growing in popularity and will bring in about £5 per order.

I have also decided on a large site which I am going to build. The guys that know me will know that I used to work for an online toy retailer, MailOrderExpress which used to be the largest toy shop in Europe for almost 4 years. So I have decided to go back to what I started with, TOYS!

I have a domain name sorted, 6 characters, brandable and contains the word “toys”. I havent said before but, at least for now, I wont be posting any of my domains names on this site.

Hosting Switched!

Feb 02

So after selling a few more sites off at Digital Point I had more than enough in my PayPal account to cover the cost of a years hosting. So I ordered my hosting online, and within minutes it was set up and working. Changed my nameservers on this domain, did a dnsflush, magic the site was resolving to the new wordpress installation done through the TSOHost control panel! From the first going to TSOhosts website, changing the nameservers, installing wordpress and import my old posts and theme, the whole process took no more than 10 minutes, at least 5 of which was waiting for 123 reg to update the nameservers.

So now I have lightning fast, UK based hosting with the best support I have ever had for my main site, I just need to transfer the rest of them over.

How much can I really earn?

Jan 30

While reading through Kirstys blog over at Affiliate Stuff I found quite an old, but still applicable post.

One of the main things people want to know when starting out in affiliate marketing, how much cash can I make? Well the answer is, how much do you want!

There are affiliate marketers out there earning hundreds of thousands per year (my idols!), and there are thousands more who think that throwing a website up with a couple of affiliate links on will make them a millionaire before the end of the week.

The fact is, as I am finding out myself, there is money in affiliate marketing, but dont expect it to be given to you on a plate. You will need to work for it, the harder you work, the better the reward. There is no magic key that will unlock a super rich lifestyle over night, but given time and hard work, there is no reason why anyone cant make some cash from affiliate marketing, whether it be enough to pay for your holiday each year, or enough to live on!

In a previous post I set myself a target of £50 per day by the end of the year. Seems quite a lot, zilch to £19k in a year! Surely not possible? Lets break it down a bit, and show you exactely how possible it is.

At the end of 12 months (365 days), I want to be earning a total of £50 per day. So, during that 365 days I need to do enough work to add 14p per day to my income! I had planned to put up 1 website a week. As long as that website is earning my 98p a day by the end of the year I will hit my target (50 sites @ £1 per day = £50 per day).

So now if I said you have 1 week to make a website that within a year will make you 98p a day you would probably day thats easy. Well if you can do that every week, for a year, you’ve just earnt youself a nice £19,000 per year bonus!

One of the things Im really looking forward to is the fact that each website I make will continue to make me money for as long as it is relevant. Lets say I get up to £20k in the first year (remember, its only 14p per day!), in the second year I lose 50% of the commission from those sites, Im still earning £10k. If I repeat my first year, by the end of the 2nd year I will be earning £30k, repeat this several times, combined with the fact you will get better and soon be making sites earning a lot more than 14p per day and theres no limit to the amount you can earn.

99.99% Uptime! Yeah Right!

Jan 29

When I decided I was going to give affiliate marketing a go, the first thing I did was sort out a “decent” hosting account. I thought I had found a great supplier in the form of ScalaHosting! Pretty much unlimited (for my needs) reseller hosting for $6.95 a month, great reviews and the online technical support chat was always online (when I checked).

So I signed up with them and started creating my sites. First few weeks was great, then it got worse, and worse and worse! Firstly all my sites got hacked! Not too much of a problem I thought, I’ll contact the online tech support. Within minutes I was chatting to someone – everything was good! That was, until I asked a question. For every question I asked I simply got referred to the FAQ and told to “just restore the site”. I got the sites back up and running eventually anyway, at which point, the hosting went down, for 4 hours! I decided to set up some free uptime monitoring. During the time I was with them, then averaged about 92% uptime!

So, I decided to switch to another well recommended site, EZPZ hosting. UK hosting and WHMCS thrown in free for £8.99 a month. Not too bad, got to be better than Scala! First month, suprising was fine. The only problem I had with them was the slow response to tickets. They state a couple of minutes on the website. I didnt have a response to a single one in less than 3 hours, most where 4 hours or more. Since I renewed my hosting a week or so ago it has gone down (quite literally) hill a lot! I have had at least 2 or 3 emails per day from the monitoring sites saying that my sites where down.

So, I’ve decided that as I am expecting these sites to evolve into a sustainable income I need a decent web host. Fortunately for me, I already know of an excellent web host – TSOHost (Click here to go to their site)!! I use this company to host my current full time jobs websites on and have been using them for a year now without a bad word to say about them. Uptime is incredible, support is even better! I’ve sometimes broken my website and the guys over at TSO have either fixed it for me or told me how to do it within minutes of reporting the problem! Even if you accidentally delete your website, it doesnt matter – you have full access to a backup, which is done every 15 minutes!!! Now the reason I didnt use these guys from the start is simple, price. I wanted to invest as little as possible to start off with so wanted my hosting as cheap as possible. An account to host 50 domains costs £9.99 per month, or £99.99 per year. I can not recommend these guys enough and as soon as I have sold off a few more of my sites on Digital Point I will be transferring to TSO. The only “downside” is that they use their own control panel and at the minute it isnt possible to import your CPanel accounts into it so I will have to manually transfer each website and database manually.

Plus with TSO, unlike the previous 2 cowboys, if they dont make their 99.9% uptime, you get a month free! I just wish I had saved my self the hassle of changing hosts twice and gone with them from the start!

Spring Tidy!

Jan 28

New year, new start. I started playing around with SEO & affiliate marketing towards the backend of last year – and of course, I made plenty of mistakes! The main one being spending literally hours looking for domain names that had been dropped or I thought where good enough to resell. End result, I ended up with about 20 domains which, some partially developed, some with nothing on at all.

So now I have decided to get rid of all my unwanted domains and websites which I wont be developing any further. As I was listing some I couldnt help but think “Why the hell did I register that!”. As most of the domains are .com they only cost me about £3.50 each so I wasnt too fussed if I didnt get anything back for them but thought I would try my luck over at Digital Point.

So far I have sold 3 websites and 1 domain for just under $200 (about £120) which Im happy with. It covers the time I spent on the sites and the reg fees plus it gives me £100 I needed to transfer my hosting to a better host (I’ll post later about this as I’ll rant on forever about it!).

I’ve still got about another 10 sites/domains to sell which will hopefully raise a bit more cash to get me started with a decent PPC campaign.

While I’m cleaning out my virtual space, I’m going to get my home office sorted as well. I chucked a couple of desks in one of the spare rooms when we moved in and dropped my computers on them but Its not almost impossible to get in the room due to the amount of rubbish piled in front of them!

How To Find A Niche?

Jan 27

This is one of the most asked questions I have read while reading up and trying to learn as much as I can about affiliate marketing and search engine optimisation.

Here is my quick 5 step guide that I use for finding and chosing a new niche.

1) Think of a keyword. Normally an advert will come on TV or I will read something which will give me an idea for a keyword. For the sake of this post we will use “Toasters” as the keyword.

2) How Large Is The Niche – Use Google Keyword Tool to get a rough number of searches per month and also similar keywords and phrases. Make sure you use “Exact” match rather than “Broad” match. As you can see the term “4 slice toaster” gets 22,000 keyword searches per month.

3) Domain Name – Is the exact match on the domain name available? If you are targeting the UK market you want either a “.co.uk” or “.org.uk” – in that order. For this example both are taken, but we will pretend that the “.org.uk” is available for the sake of this example.

4) Check Your Competition – The next thing to do is to put yourself in the shoes of the searcher. Try searching for your keyword – what results come up. You want to check the first page, how well optomised are the pages? Do you feel you could outrank them?

5) How Large Is The Niche REALLY! – But we already covered this in step 2 you say? The Google Keyword tool isnt 100% accurate, its for getting a rough idea only! I found the easiest way of finding the actual amount of searches is to use Adwords. Simply create an account and set up a campaign for your keyword “4 slice toaster”. Now this is where you need to do the exact opposite of what you would normally do when creating an adwords campaign. You DONT want people to click your ads, you just want to see how many impressions it gets. So on this example you might bid on the word “4 slice toaster” but make your advert about Safari Parks, or something else totally disconnected from the actual keyword so that you will get as few clicks as possible. Let the campaign run for a few days then have a look how many impressions you have. From that you will be able to work out the actual number of searches per month. You may want to look at the trends section in the Keyword tool in order to take any seasonal variation into account.

Now, provided you picked a decent niche to start off with, found a keyword using the keyword tool, got an exact match on the domain and then finally the adwords searches are good enough to create a decent amount of traffic once you get your site listed, you have found yourself a tidy little niche that could make you some decent money.

Now you need to get on with creating the website :)

First BIG Order!

Jan 24

One of the things I really love about affiliate marketing already is going to bed! Seriously, not only is it the only time my brain stops thinking about it – but when knowing that your websites are working away earning you money through the night is great. Sometime last night, I got a big order from my first affiliate marketing website through Amazon – 26 books and a video game (which is what my website is marketing!), grand total of the order was about £200 which made me about £12 in commission!

Its a pity I dont get orders like that every day, I would have already hit my July target if I did. It gave me a good push though, one website made £12 in one night. If I get my 20 websites up and running and each site makes 1 sale like that per month I will hit my target!

This is also one of the reasons why I prefer Amazon over any other affiliate, their massive range of products. If I had put my video games website through to say Game or Gamestation etc then rather than a £200 order, I would have got a £20 order which is why wherever possibly I will be using Amazon as my main affiliate and possibly use a few others as “backup” or to cover niches where Amazon isnt as competitive or doesnt stock the range of products Im selling.
