Voucher Code…

Jun 04

So last week I put a voucher code on one of my sites to see what difference it made to conversion rates. For the 3 weeks before putting the voucher code live I had averaged around a 9% conversion rate. I was hoping that adding a voucher code would increase this considerably as it was about 10% discount on the item I was selling. So I left the voucher code on the site for 1 week.

In that week the site received about 200 uniques, of which I sent 96 clicks to the merchants. Now I would have expected 8 or 9 sales from this based on my previous conversion rate, preferably a bit more due to the loss in commission due to the voucher code. So how annoyed do you think I was when I only made 1 sale! Thats a drop from 9% to just over 1%!!! Everything was working properly, links all correct, voucher code worked, item was in stock. I have since removed the discount code and made a few sales and had around a 6% conversion rate over the last few days (although its usually higher on a weekend so it should balance back out).

I have contacted the merchant and the affiliate network and theres no problems anywhere. It just doesnt make any sense. I may give it another go in a couple of weeks but for now the voucher code is staying off!

I don’t know if in your case the voucher code removal was coincidental but it’s very strange!

Crazy isn’t it, but I think it’s a sign of the times. Last year if I sent 100 visitors to a merchant I would average about 3 sales, nowadays, I would be lucky to get 1 sale.

Although my earnings are going up each month I am having to create double the amount of targetted traffic, people just aren’t buying like they used to. Damn recession! :(

Keep up the good work, I enjoy reading your blog :)

It does seem very strange, but I cant see any other reason why the conversion rate dropped. As I said I was averaging around 9-10% before I put the voucher code live, while it was live I averaged around 1%. Since removing it a week ago I have averaged just over 10% again! The traffic to the site was increasing steadily as it does each week, I sent roughly the same amount of clicks through to the merchant, but the sales were a lot lower.

Hi, Just noticed your blog site.

Maybe the visitors were in the mindset of trying to find a better discount code. So now they know the product or merchant has a discount code, they’re at the store check out and then search around to see if they can find a bigger discount. They probably go through a few voucher codes sites and then still end up using the same code. At which point they’ve most likely clicked through from a voucher code site last invalidating your sale.

    Sucks doesn’t it
